February 2012

2/29/12-Happy Leap Day! Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • A manager at a K-Mart held off an armed robber long enough for the police to arrive and haul the guy off.  The manager was even shot by the robber as they wrestled for the robber's gun, but the manager finally got control of it and held the robber until the police could get there. The manager is in critical condition at the hospital.  Chances are he'll lose his job just because that's usually what happens when someone at a big box store does something heroic.
  • What are the happiest places to live in the US? According to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, Hawaii is the happiest, based on six measures.  Wisconsin is the 22nd happiest place in the US.  Surprisingly, bringing up the rear is Nevada.
  • We had a very informational conversation with Dr. Francisco Soto of St Nicholas Hospital and Prevea about Sleep Apnea.  You can find out more here. You can also contact Dr. Soto here.

2/27/12-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • In addition to last night's Oscars, the winner's for the annual "Razzie" awards were announced.  The Razzies are the anti-Oscars, celebrating the year's worst films.  The big winner?  Adam Sandler for "Jack & Jill"
  • Meanwhile, at the Oscars. it was a big night for "The Artist."  I am also convinced that Meryl Streep would win an Oscar if all she did in a movie was read from a phone book.  Here's the list of winners.
  • Adam and Ben joined us from Anytime Fitness today and they want to tan your hide.  That is, if you purchase a membership on March 6th, they'll throw in three months of free tanning.
2/24/12-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • One of the highlights of participating in the Oscars is the Governor's Ball following the awards.  There, you chow down on incredible food crafted by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck.  This year, the chef has created 3D desserts, which actually require you to wear the 3D glasses that you would wear at the movies.
  • There is no end to the way potential employers evaluate you.  First, they analyzed your credit scores.  Now, they have developed criteria to judge your Facebook page and project your success.  Whatever happened to working hard, being good at what you do and a solid track record?
2/23/12-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • A man in New York has sued Frito Lay claiming that the chips he was sold were not "all natural" as claimed on the package.  In doing some research, he found that the chips were made from genetically grown plants, which doesn't fit the all-natural description.  Frito Lays says the products comply with all federal laws.
  • What is the most popular state in the country according to a recent survey conducted by public policy polling?  To the shock of no one, it's Hawaii.  Colorado was second and Tennessee was third.  The bottom five? Utah, Mississippi, New Jersey, Illinois and California.  Wisconsin finished 16th.
  • Paul from Menards in Manitowoc joined us to tell us about how everything in their store is rebated through Sunday
  • Paul from the Vacuum and Sewing Center in Manitowoc explained why a good quality vacuum cleaner is a much better investment than a cheap one from a big box store.

2/21/12-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • What's the top consumer complaint in Wisconsin?  Those annoying phone calls you get in the middle of dinner.
  • Last night on "The Voice" there was some great talent including a Chicago guy who worked at a sandwich shop.
  • Greg Anderson joined us for "Money Talks Tips and Traps."  A lot of people have received unemployment benefits last year and Greg gave us some tips on how to make sure you don't get burned on your taxes. Hear all of Greg's sage wisdom here.

2/13/12-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • Today we honor the musical legacy of Whitney Houston.  Her music moved us all and we'll be sharing it with you all morning long.
  • The Grammys were held last night and the big winner was Adele.  She also per formed in public for the first time since her November throat surgery and sounded great, although her rebuilt voice seemed to lack a little of that "smoky" quality.
  • Ben and Adam from Anytime Fitness joined us to remind you that you can work out at Anytime Fitness, anytime. That's 24/7/365.
2/12/12-Princess and I are watching the Grammys tonight.  What is Foo and why do you have to fight it?
2/11/12-OMG! Whitney Houston, dead at 48.
2/10/12-Here's what we talked about this morning:
2/9/12-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • Whether you love them or they annoy you, the greeter has always been a part of Walmart.  Now, the company says, it is changing the role of the greeter to be inside the store, not at the front entrance.  Why do I like Walmart greeters?  It always reminded me I need to call my parents.
  • After eight seasons, "House" will be hanging up his stethoscope.  The show will conclude it's run in May.  With any luck, Cuddy, 13 and Cameron will all return on last time.
  • Paul from the Vacuum and Sewing Center in Manitowoc joined us to talk about a great gift this Valentine's day: A sewing machine from Janome. They are great for quilting!

2/7/12-Here's what we talked about this morning:
2/6/12-Here's what we talked about last night:
  • It was a fun Big Game Sunday with the game coming down to the very end.  Congrats to New York for their win and toNBC for excellent game coverage.  It doesn't get much better than Al Michaels behind the mike.
  • The Big Game commercials were okay but not spectacular yesterday (IMHO).  This one was my favorite:

  • Adam and Ben from Anytime Fitness joined us this morning to expl, ain what a wellness social is.
  • In case you were wondering which of the recipies from our "Big Game Grub" page we served at our house, it was this one.  It was awesome, too.  The only problem was that I was serving it at halftime and that's when Princess decided to pay attention to the TV because Madonna was on.  Oh, bother.
2/3/12-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • It's almost time for the Big Game.  Why do we call it the Big Game and not what they call it on TV?  Because in any kind of commercial or promotional material (like this blog) we have to say "Big Game" because if we said the other, we'd get a nastygram from the NFL for violating their trademarks.  Seriously.
  • Speaking of the Big Game, here's some fun food facts.  And here's some other useless Big Game trivia, sure to ma, ke you the Cliff Clavin of your Big Game party.
  • Madonna's set list for halftime may or may not have been leaked, but here's a peek at what she might be singing so you can better plan your bathroom break.
2/2/12-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • A Star Trek fan in England took great pains to reconstruct the bridge of Star Trek Voyager (without Jeri Ryan) in his living room.  The project took him ten years and $150,000.  Howe, ver, the apartment is in the name of his ex-wife who wants to sell it.  Beam me out of he, re, Mr Tuvoc!
  • It's the end of the line for New Holstein's Grayson Schmitz on Top Chef Texas. She was eliminated last night when her large, skinless chicken breasts failed to wow the judges.
  • Looking for an economical way to heat your home?  Paul from the Vacuum and Sewing Center in Manitowoc joined us to talk about Heat Smart Heaters.  These portable heaters are infrared and move from room to room, heating areas were you are and saving you money on conventional gas or electricity.  Mention that you heard about it on Lake 98.1 and you'll receive an additional discount on your purchase.
2/1/12-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • Here's a what would you do pop quiz.  You are in a hurry to get somewhere, but when you leave your house, you see an ambulance on an emergency call blocking your car.  Do you a) wait patiently for the emergency to conclude b) call a cab or c) attempt to move the ambulance out of the way yourself.  If you picked c, you made the same choice as a man in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. He, of course, was arrested.
  • Dr. Jeff Herold joined us this morning.  He's from Prevea and St. Nicholas Hospital.  Tomorrow at noon and 6pm, he will be givi, ng a, n informational talk on carpal tunnel syndrome.  If you think you might have it or know someone with it, you may want to consider attending.  Here's the 411 plus a link to register.
