WLKN Morning Show Archive 2/08

2/29/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • Today is leap day, , February 29. It happens once every four years. Here's an interesting commentary on how leap years might have originated.
  • A would be robber was foiled in his attempt to hold up two men when it was discovered his weapon of choice was a cologne bottle. One of the would be victims had martial arts training and kicked the guys butt before the cops showed up to escort the robber to the Crossbar Hilton. The man is now being held on a charge of assault with a deadly fragrance.
  • Hearts stopped all across Wisconsin yesterday when Packers.com, the official site of the Green Bay Packers posted a page announcing the retirement of Quarterback Brett Favre. Packer officials say they do a page like that every year just in case. They also say they will be more more careful before they push the publish button next time and also make sure that the next webmaster isn't a Bears fan.
  • A convenience store in Altoona, PA is coming under some fire for their latest billboard advertising their "Crispy Frickin' Chicken." . It's a lot kinder than their "Big B*^&in' Burger".

2/28/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • Another rock and roll star from the 80's is going country. Eddie Money has recorded a new CD in Nashville, including a country version of his classic "Two Tickets to Paradise." He's not fooling around, either. Vince Gill sings backing vocals on several of the the songs.
  • B, ennett the dog went out for a walk and disappeared for over two hours. When he returned, he was freshly bathed, cut and clipped. If whoever did this wants to take a whack at Butkus D. Dogg and Murphy A. Dogg, please let me know and we'll let them out immediately!
  • In an attempt to boost sagging sales, candy companies are now adding heavy doses of caffeine to their confections. Great. Now you get a sugar rush and a caffeine high all at the same time so you can go face down into your keyboard about 4pm!

2/27/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • A man in California has been reunited with his lost wallet---33 years later. The wallet was a time capsule of sorts containing the, man's draft card, social security card and his rapid transit pass. The wallet was found during the demolition of a building on the campus of UC Santa Clara. The man says the biggest difference is the weight listed on his driver's license...130 pounds.
  • If you have to get off to a quick start in a hurry in the morning, the folks at Kraft have created a new product that's right up your alley. Called the "Bagel-Ful", this frozen bagel comes stuffed with Philly cream cheese. Just heat and run to the car! Look for them at your favrorite grocery or super store in April.
  • Swearing among teens has reached epidemic proportions. An expert on the subject says teens use these words so much in casual conversation, that they can't just turn it on and off like we could (if we didn't want our mouths washed out with soap or Tabasco sauce. Or serve detention. Or get a size 14 boot up our backside from our 6'6" neighbor Mr. Ehlers.) Let me put it to you this way: If we had a swear jar (one of those jars that you put a quarter in every time you swear) in our house for my 18 year-old step-daughter, Princess and I would have already retired to a beach as multi-millionaires two years ago.

2/26/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

2/25/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • A special thanks to all the folks who took time out of their, busy lives to attend the Lake 98.1 Bridal Expo at the Bull yesterday. It was an awesome event and I'm honored to have been asked to MC it. The models did a great job of showing off all of cool new styles. My thanks to Karen from Bridal Boutique for suppling me with the sharp looking tux I wore. It only took four people to hold the tape measure during my fitting.
  • Soda pop is one of my vices and while I know it probably isn't the healthiest choice, I like it anyway. Now comes word that soda pop may cause osteoporosis. Guess I'll be drinking a lot more ice cream floats.
  • The Oscars were pretty entertaining last night. John Stewart did a good job of hosting. In case you missed the show, here are the winners. I have to admit, I'm not familiar with a lot of the movies that were nominated. I thought "No Country for Old Men" was a democratic party propaganda film against John,McCain.
  • Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee made a guest appearance on Saturday Night Live, spoofing himself and the fact that he continues to run even though the chances of him winning are slim, none and non-existent. If you didn't stay up or you were out, here's a little taste of what the former Arkansas Governor did on the show. I have to give it to him, he certainly has a terrific sense of humor.

2/22/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • My profound thanks to all who helped break me out of jail yesterday. Lots of people helped raise money for MDA including the nice folks at the Cleveland State Bank and AAA Travel and Insurance. If you'd still like to add to our total, you can. Here's how.
  • Cartoonist Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert has taken up the cause of a casino worker fired for posting on of Adams' strips on a company bulletin board. The strip made fun of bad management. Adams has put his nebbish character, Wally, in a similar situation with the pointy headed boss.
  • The Naked Cowboy, a New York street performer who plays guitar in his underwear and a cowboy hat is suing M&Ms for erecting a billboard with an M&M in a similar get up. Robert Burck says the billboard infringes upon his unique likeness.

2/21/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • The focus this morning was on Lake 98.1 helping MDA today. Later today, I will be taking part in their "Behind Bars for Good" campaign where I will be put in jail (a nice one thankfully) and try to raise money for my bail. But this isn't about me. This is about Jerry's K, ids. And what we would like is for our extended Lake 98.1 family, our listeners, to contribute to a very worthy cause. I know times are tough right now for a lot of people, but I think all of us could come up with $5-$10 to give to those who are less fortunate than we are. The cost of therapy and treatment for people with MD is staggering and all of us live more fortunate lives. And, in the years since Jerry Lewis has been involved, many advances in research and treatment have been made. But all of that takes money. Please, find it in your heart to give whatever you can. Thanks, from MDA and Lake 98.1

2/20/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • Congrats to the Wisconsin primary winners: Barrack Obama and John McCain. On to the bonus round.
  • Say it ain't so, Chef! Emeril, my hero and culinary role model has sold his assets (everything but his restaurants) to (gulp) Martha Stewart. This in my eyes is like Batman going to work for Catwoman. I ge, t the impression in reading about it that Emeril is going to use the $45-$70 million dollars to expand his restaurant empire. I'd love to see an Emeril's restaurant as an anchor at Memorial Mall. A boy can dream, can't he?
  • In other chef news, Chef Robert Irvine of the Food Network show "Dinner Impossible" is under fire for perhaps overstating his resume. I don't care what they say about the guy, his show rocks and I will continue to watch it. I mean, who among us hasn't embellished their resume from time to time? Okay, so I never really anchored the CBS Evening News, what of it?
  • There will be a total eclipse of the moon tonight between 9pm and 9:51pm tonight. I, unfortunately will be viewing the total eclipse of the inside of my eyelids. And, no, you don't need a shoebox with a pinhole in it. You can look directly at a lunar eclipse.

2/19/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

This morning we were visited by the star of "Private Practice", Kate Walsh who talked about what it was like going from being a supporting player on "Grey's Anatomy" to the star of "Private Practice." If you missed the interview, you can listen to it here.
  • Some things are better left unsaid. Here are ten things you should avoid saying at the office. That is, if you like your job. Around here, there is only one phrase we are not allowed to use: "Yes, Chris."
  • Looking for something a little bigger to sail Lake Michigan with? How about a luxury yacht that accommodates 35 crew members, has several salons with big screen TVs, 10 staterooms, a gym, a prayer room, pools, saunas, bulletproof glass and an escape submarine. All for just $35 million dollars. And it's only had one owner: Saddam Hussein. After all, he doesn't need it anymore.

2/18/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • Who says penn, ies don't have value? A man in California just sold 301 rare pennies for a staggering total of $10.7 million dollars.
  • A company in New Zealand has created a hit song...for dogs. The song is recorded at a high frequency only dogs can hear. I don't mind Butkus D. Dogg and Murphy A. Dogg kicking back the jams, I just shudder to think of the singing along part.
  • A scientist in Germany has invented an anti-snoring pillow that has a wireless connection to your home computer. Upon hearing your mate snore, it fills little bags with air, re-positioning the head until the snoring stops. It's much easier on your back than rolling them over yourself or re-positioning yourself on the couch or in the guest room. I'm told that I snore, but to be honest, I'm asleep and I don't really know.

2/15/08-I will be participating in the MDA , ;jail and bail on Thursday, February 21 in Manitowoc. It would be great if you could contribute a few tax deductable dollars to a most worthy cause to get me out. I understand to motivate you, they show unending Jerry Lewis movies until you raise the bail. Please, have a heart and pledge something! Click here to help. Thank-you!

2/15/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • Pepsi is testing out a new soda, called Pepsi Raw, in England. Unlike the Pepsi you and I drink, Pepsi Raw is made from all natural ingredients. If it catches on, you might see it here in the states. I wonder what kind of Super Bowl commercials they would come up with for a product named "Pepsi Raw.?"
  • The latest casualties in cars are ashtrays and lighters which have been replaced by po, wer receptacles, storage areas and cup holders. No longer will you be able a couple of bucks for your occasiona, l cheeseburger binge in a safe place. You can still get one, but it may cost you up to $150.
  • A woman in Washington DC is suing a big box store for $54 million for losing her laptop computer while it was in for repair. Not only did they lose it, they lied to her by losing. You would think living in Washington DC, the woman would be used to behavior like that.
  • A cigar shop owner in Sacramento has banned California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger from his store after the Gov supported a health care bill that seriously curtailed cigar smoking. The bill failed to pass the California assembly and the Gov vowed to the store owner "I'll be back!"

2/14/08-Happy Valentine's Day! Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • Eight million Americans will send themselves a gift today just to feel appreciated. In Saudi Arabia, red roses are banned for Valentine's Day. Here's some other strange Valentine's Day traditions.
  • Office Romance happens. In fact, 40% of us have had an office romance. I've never had one. It shows what a wonderful person I am at work!
  • If you lean toward political correctness, here's some planet friendly, non-offensive gifts you can give your sweetheart.
  • On a personal note, I want to wish my long suffering wife, Princess, a Happy Valentine's Day. Princess is very simple to buy for on Valentine's Day. As she likes to say "If it's not bling, it's not my thing!"

2/13/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • A man in the Chicago suburb of Wheeling drew the attention of local law enforcement when he was caught roasting pigs in his yard. The auth, orities beca, me concerned when some of the pork showed up at a local store for sale. The man was cited for not having a business license. He's received calls from Texas and Tennessee from BBQ enthusiasts who hope he defends his right to BBQ.
  • Want to be part of history? This year, Americans will elect either the first woman, the first African-American or the oldest President in history. Since Wisconsin is a hotly contested state, especially on the Democratic side, many of the candidates will be stumping here. Attending a rally or speech may make you part of history. Here's where some of the candidates will be between now and Tuesday's Wisconsin primary.
  • Uno, a two year-old Beagle made history last night at the Westminster dog show, becoming the first Beagle ever to win "best in show." Our dogs, Butkus D. Dogg and Murphy A. Dogg ,refused to watch the finals because the Bichon in the competition failed to make it out of the "non-sporting" class competition.
, &, , lt;, P align=left>, 2/12/08-Recently, we had Cub Scout troop 3948 visit us at the Lake 98.1 studios. Here's the little Station I.D. they did for us! We're happy to give tours of the station to qualified groups. For more information, just ask!

2/8/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

2/7/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • A tip of the cap to all of the hard working emergency workers, snow plow drivers and law enforcement officers who busted their butts all day yesterday and all night last night making sure the streets got plowed and motorists were safe. While you most likely snug and dry in your home, these folks were out in the snow and the wind making sure everybody that had to be out got where they were going safely. Also to our Lake 98.1 web master who kept our website up to the minute all,day with important closing information.
  • Many municipalities and school corporations have some big decisions to make. With the 16.5" snowfall yesterday, many towns are running out of salt and have also used thousands of dollars of overtime keeping the streets clear. Meanwhile, the folks who run our schools may be faced with the realistic prospect of holding classes into mid-summer because they have exhausted their snow days and need to hit the state minimum of 180 days of school. This might not be a bad time for the state to reconsider the rule that mandates schools cannot start before September 1st. Doing that may give school corporations a little more wiggle room in their planning.
  • A couple in Utah were rescued after being stranded in heavy snow for twelve days. In order to survive, they fashioned snow shoes out of the seat cushions of their car and lit carburetor cleaner to make fires for warmth. I wonder if they will get an invitation to compete in "Survivor Yukon."
  • Actor Jason Gedrick is 41 today. He's a character actor and is one of those actors that you may know his face, but not know his name. In 1995, he played the part of Neil Avedon in the first season of "Murder One" ,one of the great TV legal thrillers of all time (starring one of my favorite actors Daniel Benzali). If you enjoy a show with the suspense of "Mission Impossible" <, /A>and "The Fugitive" and the legal aspects of "Law & Order", purchase the DVD of the first season. It is awesome!

2/5/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • The victims of the tornado in Kenosha a few weeks ago have received a bill from their cable company informing them that they owe $2,000 for cable boxes lost during the storm. Residents have raised such a stink that the cable company, through a spokesperson now says the company is willing to write the losses off.
  • Boy, am I excited about this one. Scientists in New Zealand are close to developing an onion that doesn't make you cry when you cut it. As often as I use onions in my cooking and as sensitive as my eyes are, I cried when I heard the news.
  • Some weird criminals this morning: Mickey Mouse is a 47 year-old African-American bartender who lives in Anaheim California who was recently tossed in the Sacramento jail for DUI. It turns out that a practice exercise got admitted into the permanent record. I don't know who Donald Duck is, but I'm pretty sure Goofy lives in Washington, DC. In,Vermont, a woman, arrested for DUI called her ex-husband to come get her at the Crossbar Hilton. Turns out he was on the sauce too, rolling his vehicle on the way to and now faces charges of DUI and driving under a suspended license. And, from Phoenix, comes the story of a van that rear ended another van. What makes, this news is the van that caused the accident was full of illegal aliens and the van it hit was from the department of homeland security.

2/4/08-The people at Miller (who didn't advertise during the Super Bowl came up with a killer viral video. Take a look:

2/4/08-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • That was a very exciting Super Bowl game yesterday. And, for the Giants to win in the last minute over the Patriots made it one of the most exciting Super Bowls in history. Usually they are over by the middle of the third quarter. By the way, no one on the Lake 98.1 airstaff picked the Giants. Don't let them tell you any differently.
  • Viewers in northwest Arkansas didn't get to see the first half of the Super Bowl. Yes, they have electricity. But a software glitch at the local FOX affiliate caused the station to go off the air for the first half of the game. I'm sure the FCC will enjoy seeing the letters written in crayon about this one.
  • As usual, the ads during the game were as entertaining as the game itself. I , had two fa, vorite, s: T,,he B,,ud,ad with , the do, g t, raining the horse and the Coke ad where Stewy and Underdog are fighting over the coke balloon. To see what America thought and to vote on your favorite, click here.

2/2/08-Here are some more places for you to get recipes for your big game party. If you try any of these, please let me know how they turned out.
