October 2011

10/31/11-Here's what we talked about this morning:

10/28/11-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • Say goodbye to the dream machine. The trend setting alarm clock is being discontinued by Sony. Here are some pictures of the Dream Machine over the years.
  • What were some of the most popular Halloween costumes when YOU were out trick or treating? Here are some from 1985-1993.
  • Speaking of Halloween costumes,Chef John joined us from the Courthouse Pub in Manitowoc to remind you that if you wear your Halloween costume to the Pub this weekend, you could receive a free adult libation. The phrase this week is "gluten free." If you know that Monday morning at 8:10 and are the correct caller, you'll win a $50 gift card from the Courthouse Pub and Lake 98.1.

10/27/11-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • An Indian billionaire has built the most expensive house ever but won't be living in it. The 27 story building does not have enough windows on the east side to let in the morning sun, something in the Hindu religion that indicates bad luck. The home, has three helipads, a ballroom, a movie theater, and a series of floating gardens. It cost $1 billion to build. Good luck finding a buyer.
  • It's back. McDonald's is bringing back its cult favorite "McRib" for a short period next month. McRib fanatics are drooling while health advocates are seething. Make sure you vote in our front page poll and tell us if you are going to enjoy a McRib.
  • Brett from Menards joined us to remind us that now that the cold weather is here, Menards has some great values to help keep your home warm this winter. They also have a variety of products for National Fire Safety month, including an escape ladder for less than $30.

10/19/11-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • Last year around this time, we were talking about the KFC Doubledown, that Chicken, bacon cheese thing that used the chicken for bread. Now, KFC has come out with "the cheesy bacon bowl" which combines their famous bowl (chicken tenders, mashed potatoes, corn, gravy and cheese) with bacon. Death by dinner, anyone?
  • Last night on "Dancing With The Stars", Carson Kressley was sent packing.
  • Mary from St. Nicholas Hospital joined us to tell us about "Operation Gratitude", a great way to rid yourself of extra Halloween candy. It's a great way to thank our men and women fighting for us overseas.

10/18/11-Here's what we talked about this morning:

10/17/11-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • First, today is the fourth anniversary of our morning show on Lake 98.1. Thanks to you, our listener, for taking time to join us.
  • What are the most pirated movies in history? These are.
  • Are you happy with what you named your kids? Eight percent of parents would like a do over.
  • Adam and Ben from Anytime Fitness joined us this morning to talk about baseline evaluations. And no, it doesn't have anything to do with you backhand.

10/14/11-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • Brewers fans, here's your chance to get your "beast mode" on, literally. A company is now making Beast Mode t's and hoodies with part of the proceeds going to charity. Order yours here.
  • A Chicago suburb is considering passing a law prohibiting eating and driving. They say it would cut down on accidents.
  • Chef John joined us this morning from the Courthouse Pub in Manitowoc and talked about some special comfort foods that the pub will soon be serving. If you know the phrase "Carmel Apple Pie" Monday morning at 8:10, you could win a $50 gift card from the Courthouse Pub and Lake 98.1.

10/13/11-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • So many people are tied to their mobile devices, it's hard to imagine what would happen if they stop working. If you are a Blackberry user, you don't have to. A glitch in Blackberry's network has caused widespread issues with the mobile device, curtailing text messaging and e-mail. Blackberry users are taking to Twitter to complain. Tweet, tweet, we can't hear you.
  • A musical biography about the life of Susan Boyle may be coming to America. It's called "I dreamed a dream" and it details her rise from a frumpy office worker to a recording sensation. Almost sounds like "Damn Yankees" doesn't it, except the devil in this case is Simon Cowell.
  • We had a chance to talk with Gunnar Nelson this morning. He and his brother Matthew will be in town tomorrow to perform "Ricky Nelson Remembered", a tribute to his late father who had a string of hits in the fifties and sixties, capped off by his 1973 hit "Garden Party. Find out more about the show here. If you missed the interview, you can listen to it here.

10/10/11-Here's what we talked about this morning:

10/9/11-Last night, Princess and I went to Milwaukee to see Food Network Celebrity Alton Brown. We are both big fans of his (now finished) Food network Show "Good Eats." The show was a glorified book signing, sponsored by a Milwaukee book store. Alton answered questions from the audience for about an hour and a half, then adjourned for a book signing. Everyone (including us) who attended, was given a copy of his "Good Eats III" book, which contains the recipes for seasons ten through thirteen. He signed every copy, and, if you were willing to wait in line, he'd personalize it for you. We opted to beat the traffic. But he was very funny and entertaining on stage and the fact that we were toting home two forty dollar cookbooks was well worth the trip.

10/7/11-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • Three TV shows got canceled yesterday. Okay, two shows and a song. NBC rid itself of "Free Agents", a very unfunny sitcom, while the CW gave up on H8R, a reality show where a regular person who doesn't like a celebrity gets to meet that celebrity and work things out. And, ESPN and Hank Williams Jr. (depending on whose spin you believe) are ending their long association and there will be no more Monday Night Football Song. Now how will I know if I am ready for some football?
  • This is National Cheese Month. Here's some ideas on how to celebrate.
  • Last night, Princess and I attended the Fall Harvest Wine Tasting Dinner at the Bull. I've never been to one, but since I'm not getting younger, it's time to start working on the bucket list. If you are not familiar with one and you enjoy good food, I highly recommend it. They serve four courses of very interesting food paired with four different wines. I learned quite a bit about wine, which was my intent as the only thing I know about wine is that if you drink Mad Dog 20/20 too fast, you'll throw up. BTW, we've been to the Bull a few times now and really enjoy their , attention to detail and their friendly service.

10/6/11-Here's what we talked about this morning:

10/5/11-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • NBC has canceled the first show of the season, the controversial "The Playboy Club." The show had problems gaining traction against two highly rated shows "Castle" and "Hawaii 5-0" and was under fire from religious groups because of the title of the show.
  • Last night on "Dancing With The Stars", star of "The Hills" Kristin Cavallari was eliminated from competition. I think it was the work of Packer fans who know that she has been seeing Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler.
  • Joyce from St. Nicholas hospital joined us to talk about National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to remind us about the March of the Pink Brigade event on October 15th. Find out more her, e.

10/4/11-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • Give it up for the police chief of Lodi, NJ. When an officer radioed in to tell dispatchers that the Chief's wife was illegally parked, the Chief ordered her to be ticketed. The Chief either has the courage of his convictions or enjoys sleeping on the couch.
  • It looks like this year's halftime entertainment at the Super Bowl will be Madonna. I think they ought to put her and Lady Gaga in a steel cage and let them settle their differences. I'd actually delay going to the bathroom to watch that.
  • Greg Anderson joined us for "Money Talks Tips and Traps." Unlike some things, bad money decisions may actually be able to be reversed. Listen to all of Greg's sage wisdom with the "Money Talks Tips & Traps" podcast available here.

10/3/11-H, ere's what we talked about this morning:
